The Whitstable Darkroom

I am pleased to announce that my newly constructed darkroom is up and running in Whitstable and I am offering exciting day and half-day courses tailored to the individual and on a 1:1 basis. The darkroom is also available for hire on an individual basis.

The Whitstable darkroom is situated two minutes from Whitstable Castle and five minutes from the seafront and harbour. It is designed to comfortably accommodate two people and has all the professional equipment needed to process film and print in black and white up to 20″x25″ from a full range of negative sizes.

I am able to offer the following options:

Full-day Course (Six hours of individual tuition – £150)

This is designed for anyone interested in experiencing the magic of darkroom and film-based photography.

During the day you will learn:

  • How to use a Hasselblad Medium Format camera (The ‘Rolls Royce’ of film cameras) to take your own portrait or landscape shots.
  • How to develop negatives from black and white film.
  • How to print enlarged images from your negatives

…and at the end of the day you will take away a 16”x12” photograph produced during the session from your own negatives.

Half-day Courses (Three hours of individual tuition – £75)

These sessions can be tailored to individual requirements and could consist of elements of the full-day course, advanced printing techniques or tuition in the making of photograms, the use of liquid emulsions and other ‘alternative’ or experimental darkroom approaches.
All materials and chemicals are included in the course costs and light refreshments will be provided.

The facility is available for hire on a half day ( three and a half hours) or full day (seven hours) basis.

Chemistry can be provided for an additional charge. Photographic paper must be provided by the customer.
