This shot was taken at the end of an improvised gig last week in Canterbury. The Scratch Orchestra is run by Sam Bailey, a music lecturer at Christchurch University and the players are his students. The musicians played for an hour wearing black hoods that placed them in a state of sensory restriction and must have forced them to listen in a particularly concentrated fashion. The black and white forms and the intervals between the figures suggests musical notation. Sam runs the weekly alternative music session ‘Free Range’ at The Veg Box Cafe in Canterbury.
