This is my wife at Bolt’s Tail in Devon, it really does seem like the edge of the world looking out to sea there. I was thinking of the famous German Romantic painting by Caspar David Friedrich ‘The Wanderer over a Sea of Mist’. Cant seem to get Art History out of my head!
Toma is a French musician who played in the forest at the final performance of Sam Baileys ‘Piano in the Woods’ project as well as with Evan Parker and Matt Wright during The Sounds New Festival in Canterbury last week. I believe that Toma began his musical career as a conventional drummer but now he tours the world creating mesmeric percussive rhythms with a floor tom and natural materials principally stones. He has spent time with the Pygmies in Cameroon and his subtle technique of sound-creating with natural sources is ‘primitive’ and therefore timeless .
